Gilman School Sex Abuse Claims Shock the Community

It’s not uncommon for predators at private schools to misuse trusted relationships with students by exploiting them for sexual gratification.

The latest Maryland independent school facing a crisis is the Gilman School, a prestigious all-boys school in Roland Park.

The middle school teacher is Christopher Bendann, a 38-year-old social studies teacher and Gilman graduate charged with sexual abuse and rape of a student.

The charges are based on an allegation that Bendann sought sexually explicit photographs from students and asked them to take off his clothes in exchange for rides home from parties.

The charges include numerous examples of improper conduct outside of school hours and off school property, including sex acts allegedly occurring while Bendann was housesitting for families.

Where Do the Gilman School Sex Abuse Claims End?

According to a state prosecutor, more victims have come forward asking to talk to police, and an attorney representing the victim said he believes there are many more victims.

After the  Gilman teacher was charged with sexual abuse and rape of a student, Gilman’s head of school considered what can be done to make it easier for victims to come forward so that abuse can be caught earlier.

And although Gilman took immediate action to start the healing process, independent school leaders say Gilman isn’t unique in that coordinated, systemic changes are needed to prevent abuse.

That might include such as safeguards to prevent teachers with abuse allegations from being passed from one school to another, or a  national registry for teachers who have been disciplined or fired for sexual misconduct.

We believe all victims of Gilman school sex abuse deserve justice and potential compensation, beginning with a free, private case evaluation by our experienced legal team.
